Third Culture Kid
Materials: Friendly goat + Syrian clothing
This artwork is a unique appropriation of Christ that explores the introduction of Christianity to India by Saint Thomas, a Syrian disciple. I consider whether this history may have influenced my upbringing in a Catholic background. However, the focus of the work is on the history of rugs, inspired by a famous painting by Gentile Bellini. The concept that rugs were highly valued and gifted along the silk trade route, and incorporated into European paintings of Christ, sparked my interest in researching the language of patterns and motifs in carpets. The piece is an intriguing exploration of the intersection of religion, trade, and art.
